From the serious to the ridiculous; in a career in design and print for 30 years I've written about the health benifits of foot spas, promoted childrens nurseries and written articles in car magazines!
Below is an extract from a tale that appears on
About 60 years ago a bunch of guys were here for a week of snowshoeing and climbing. They were staying in the old house at the end of town; you know, the one that’s derelict as you come in with all the colonial features? It was owned by the Santos family, rich landowners who opened their doors to the world’s respected climbing community. Anyway, it was just after the war and a bunch of soldiers came over for some R&R. Carlo, generously opened his doors to them and offered to be their guide on some of the climbs. He started off doing some lower level walks along the Rio Lanjarón, then took them snowshoeing in the forests and mountains above Puente Palo in the Soportujar.
The men were fired up and wanted to go higher. Convinced they could manage Mulhacén, Carlo engaged the services of a local guide. He spoke only Spanish but was known to have climbed Mulhacén more times than many other men in the area.
Being winter, the climb to the summit would be a two day trip. The team headed up to Capileira then along the track walk up to the mountain hut Refugio del Poqueira where they could rest and prepare for the hike up to the summit. With crampons and axes ready they set off, following the line of the Rio Mulhacén as a guide, then climbed towards the ridge before going west along it. It’s said that a couple of the team felt that they could see a short cut. Ignoring the local guide, the two men ventured off and out of sight of the main party. They, in turn, continued up the planned route and, by the time they had reached the summit a few hours later, the cloud was dropping rapidly and temperatures were down to -16’. The two who had taken the short cut were nowhere to be seen.
Higgy was born from a bet over a glass of wine with a friend who said I couldn't write a poem about a motorbike riding hedgehog.
Not only did I write a poem, I illustrated it, creating a character for books and further stories.
He's been so successful that I am collaborating with the Happyhogs Hedgehog Sanctuary in Solihull to raise funds for the care of abandoned hogs with the publication of a set of books.
The poem can be found on my blog
